What if You KNEW Your Efficacy Was Assured?

I just can't keep quiet. Like the apostle Paul says, there is a mystery that has been kept hidden from you, for ages, even generations: the mystery, which is Christ in you. (Colossians 2:27). This truth spoken over you in your baptism remains and seeks deeper discovery and richer integration. For your joy and the benefit of the community.

Now, I know that for many of you as you read the words below, you are going to experience some discomfort (if so, just notice it and keep reading). Most of us are unused to really accepting Jesus' audacious statement, "You are the light of the world." (Matthew 5:14) When Jesus said this he was not ignoring the brokenness and darkness of humanity (he follows these words with warnings about the hatred, lust, vengeance, selfishness, anxiety and more to which we are so prone. But he wants us to know at the outset, just like the Genesis narrative, that the truest thing about us is our light.

That Trinitarian light was implanted in our very bodies: head, heart and gut. I like to think of it this way:

You have been created in the image of the Father, or Sophia. You are a temple of Sacred Wisdom, graced to live with an Open Mind. This is FAITH.

You have been created in the image of the Son. You are a Sanctuary of Sacred Love, graced to live with an Open Heart. This is LOVE.

You have been created in the image of the Spirit, an Instrument of Sacred Instinct, graced to live with an Open Will. This is HOPE.

Claiming our light helps us to become curious about and to examine its counterpoint: darkness. When we are consciously and consistently connected to our inner light we can come close to what is dark in us and others, with less judgment, cynicism and fear. Instead we can bring curiosity, compassion and commitment.

Curiosity, compassion and commitment are 3 other words for faith and love and hope. And these are the qualities through which we and our world will experience transformation.

Claim your original goodness. Ignite the wisdom of head, heart and body to notice when and how you stray from this light. Learn to come close to the very darkness you fear and to bear witness to its transformation.
